A forerunner to the Thompson D'earth Band, Cosmology was organized in NYC by John, Dawn, and drummer Robert Jospe. Cosmology recorded for Vanguard Records and independently. The band played clubs and festivals in NYC and around the East Coast. Alumni of Cosmology include guitarists John Abercrombie, John Scofield, and Tim Reynolds, bassists Rick Laird (MahavishnuOrchestra), Dennis Irwin, Mark Egan  and  pianists Kenny Kirkland (Sting; Wynton Marsalis) Armen Donelian (Roy Ayers, Mongo Santamaria), and Steve Gaboury (Suzanne Vega, Dar Williams), trombonist Barry Rogers (Eddie  Palmieri, Dreams, The Brecker Bros.), and drummers Robert Jospe and Carter Beauford (DMB). The core of the band eventually relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia and later reformed as the Thompson D’earth Band.
