When The Serpent Flies (2006) $15 [buy CD]
When the Serpent Flies, the new CD by the Thompson D'earth Band, represents an extraordinary group of musicians at their spontaneous best. Alternating between bold instrumentals and thoughtful songwriting the music shows what the band has accomplished as they've developed their sound over the last few years: a musical chemistry bordering on telepathy and a groove-based exploratory fervor that few jazz bands can match.
Trumpeter/composer John D'earth and vocalist/songwriter Dawn Thompson are developing a whole new sound based on the intersection of trenchant songwriting and unrestrained instrumental creativity. Thompson is a unique, underivative singer who can use her voice to deliver her hypnotic, prophetic lyrics, improvise a solo and jam up ensemble parts like a horn, or string player. D'earth is one of the best jazz trumpet players around and a composer of visionary music. Together they have created a CD that shows the unadorned splendors of their live band at the top of its collective game. Recorded at Crystalphonic in Charlottesville, VA and produced by Greg Howard.
